How to Care for Solid Wood Furniture: A Complete Guide
Share
Wood furniture is one of the best investments you can make for your home. Unlike flat-pack alternatives, a well-made piece of solid timber furniture can last generations — but only if it's looked after properly. The good news is that caring for wood is simpler than most people think. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Keep It Away from Direct Heat and Sunlight
Wood is a natural material that expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. Placing solid wood furniture near radiators, open fires, or in direct sunlight can cause it to warp, crack, or fade over time.
What to do: Position your furniture away from direct heat sources and use curtains or blinds to limit prolonged sun exposure. If you can't avoid it, a good quality wood oil or wax will help protect the surface.
2. Clean Spills Immediately
Water is wood's biggest enemy. Left to sit, moisture can cause staining, swelling, and in severe cases, warping. The key is to act quickly.
What to do: Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — don't rub, as this can spread the liquid. For sticky residue, use a slightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip the finish.
3. Dust Regularly
Dust might seem harmless, but over time it can act as a mild abrasive and dull the surface of your furniture. Regular dusting keeps your pieces looking their best.
What to do: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth and dust in the direction of the grain. Avoid feather dusters, which tend to move dust around rather than removing it.
4. Oil or Wax Periodically
Wood furniture benefits from occasional feeding with a quality oil or wax. This replenishes the natural moisture in the wood, keeps it supple, and protects the surface from everyday wear.
What to do: For oiled finishes, apply a thin coat of furniture oil (such as Danish oil or linseed oil) every 6–12 months. For waxed finishes, apply a good quality beeswax or carnauba wax once or twice a year. Always work in the direction of the grain and buff to a shine with a clean cloth.
5. Use Coasters, Mats, and Felt Pads
Prevention is always better than cure. Simple protective measures can save your furniture from scratches, heat marks, and water rings.
What to do: Always use coasters under drinks, heat-resistant mats under hot dishes, and felt pads under decorative objects. For chairs and other furniture that moves, stick felt pads to the feet to prevent scratching your floors — and your furniture.
6. Embrace the Natural Ageing Process
One of the most beautiful things about solid wood furniture is the way it ages. Over time, oak deepens to a rich honey tone, reclaimed timber develops an even richer patina, and small marks and dents become part of the story of the piece.
Rather than trying to keep your furniture looking brand new, embrace the natural ageing process. A few minor scratches on a solid oak dining table are a sign of a life well lived — not a reason to replace it.
